Irakli Kobakhidze: freedom of expression is of supreme importance for us

“Freedom of expression shall in no way be restricted or violated on unjustified basis. The respective remedies can be undertaken within the freedom of expression, including in the legislative part”, - the Speaker, Irakli Kobakhidze commented to media about the Christmas Epistle of the Patriarch.

To the question about the legislative initiative on hereof to be soon develop, the Speaker responded that it is untimely to speak about it. “It is untimely to discuss, though we are all unified in identification of the problem – the Patriarch, Patriarchate and various representatives of the political spectrum, as well as the society. Naturally, slander, insult, so-called false information, fake news, especially obscenity we hear on daily-basis in media or social networks are unacceptable to everyone. We will naturally discuss the measures that shall be undertaken on the legal or other level and will make the decision”.

It is concern for all and this problem shall be analyzed. The Speaker underlined that freedom of expression is of supreme importance and shall not be restricted in any unjustified way. The measures can be undertaken including on the legal level.

The Speaker does not exclude the decision to be made at spring session. “It is the concern for all – for the Patriarch, President, each of us. It is the problem and it shall be discussed to be addressed. Naturally, freedom of expression shall in no way be restricted or violated on unjustified basis. The respective remedies can be undertaken within the freedom of expression, including in the legislative part. We shall start discussions without delay. I do not exclude the decision to be made at the spring session. The problem shall be analyzed and addressed. Though, I cannot make any certain statement today”.
