The Speaker, Irakli Kobakhidze attending the 140th IPU Assembly in Doha, met with the IPU President, Gabriela Cuevas Barron to discuss the Global Inter-Parliamentary Conference of the Young Parliamentarians to be held in Georgia in 2020.
According to G. Barron, she supports Georgia to host the Conference as Georgia shall exchange its experience on institutional reforms, combating corruption, accessibility to state services, open governance and Parliamentary oversight. She expressed the will to visit Georgia.
The Speaker introduced the information about the grave humanitarian and human rights situation on occupied territories: “At the meeting with the IPU President we discussed our cooperation. IPU President expressed her commitment for cooperation. We have also applied to host the Global Summit of Young Parliamentarians in summer and the IPU President expressed her personal support. We hope that IPU will make the final decision on holding the Summit in Georgia”, - the Speaker stated.
He underlined importance of IPU: “IPU Assembly allows us speaking with our friends from other countries about development and cooperation. We hold the bilateral meetings with the Speakers of various Parliaments to discuss development of our countries, bilateral cooperation etc. Naturally, we emphasize our sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
According to the IPU President, Georgia is getting better engaged in IPU activity and global dialogue: “Currently, we organize the Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians to be held in Georgia in 2020. At the meeting, we discussed cooperation in various directions. Georgia highly strives in terms of transparency and public administration and I hope to soon visit Georgia and resume discussion and witness how Georgia can share its best practice to the IPU”.
