Georgian Dream Refrains from Attending Extraordinary Plenary Session

Georgian Dream Refrains from Attending Extraordinary Plenary Session

"We once again declare that we will not participate in the parallel, contrived, sabotaged, and unpromising process planned by the radical opposition regarding the so-called extraordinary session, which is scheduled for July 18. None of the 81 members of our faction will attend the extraordinary session”, - Givi Mikanadze, the First Deputy Chairman of the faction "Georgian Dream" stated at today’s briefing.

He claims that the faction wrote a letter to Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Parliament, in which it is stated that the "Georgian Dream" will not take part in the process because its goal is to exacerbate polarization and undermine the aforementioned recommendations rather than to enhance the integration process into European and Euro-Atlantic structures.

"Additionally, because these documents were not processed, reviewed, and reconciled by the political bodies at the committee hearings, their so-called "agenda" does not adhere to the requirements of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament. Despite the fact that this topic was not brought up during the second reading, just one of them was endorsed during the first reading at the Committee sitting. The 12 recommendations of the European Commission do not at all mention it, and this year, our faction has no plans to address the constitutional modifications, on which we have already stated and made public our view. We have already been actively working in accordance with the plan put forward by Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chairman of the "Georgian Dream”. There won't be any changes to this strategy despite the fact that the discussion on Georgia has been delayed until 2023. Relevant bills will be processed, introduced, and discussed both in working groups, where members of our team and the opposition engage, as well as in the format of committee hearings. By the dates we set, the aforementioned process will be completed by December 2022, during the autumn session, which will also include various documents to be taken into consideration, including those pertaining to the court and the anti-corruption service. At the same time, we urge each radical opposition representative to refrain from employing fictitious methods to support their positions and to continue implementing the commission's recommendations. We encourage them to participate in working groups and committee activities, which is required by their charter”, - Givi Mikanadze stated.
