Meeting of Gela Samkharauli with IFAD Director

Media and Society 30 Apr 2024
Meeting of Gela Samkharauli with IFAD Director

The Chairman of the Agrarian Issues Committee, Gela Samkharauli, held a meeting with Bidisha Barooah, Director of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

During the meeting, discussions centered around the initiative endorsed in the UN General Assembly to promote the agricultural data system known as "50x2030," which Georgia joined in 2022. Attention was also directed towards matters concerning data interpretation, utilization, analytical decision-making, and the training of personnel handling basic statistical data.

Furthermore, Gela Samkharauli presented his initiative, which proposes an amendment to the draft law on Agriculture and Rural Development. According to this initiative, the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia would be tasked with analyzing data from the register of farms and enterprises in rural areas to generate forecast data.

Additionally, the importance of registering farmers and farms and preparing an information document on agricultural products was underscored during the meeting. It was suggested that this could be achieved through collaboration between IFAD, the Ministry, and other relevant stakeholders.

"For our farmers, the introduction of an agricultural data system is crucial. This system will assist them in enhancing their farms and effectively planning the marketing of their products. Due to the lack of appropriate knowledge in this field, farmers encounter various challenges, including difficulties in accessing local or international markets and making accurate forecasts. These obstacles undoubtedly impede the progress of their activities. In this regard, the support of the International Fund for Agricultural Development of the United Nations is invaluable. The director of the fund has assured us of their cooperation in providing analytical support and training, which will greatly benefit our farmers”, - Gela Samkharauli stated after the meeting.
