Gia Zhorzholiani: The rule of party financing should be fundamentally transformed

As per the leader of the Alliance of Social-Democrats and member of Parliamentary faction – alliance of Patriots and Social-Democrats, MP Gia Zhorzholiani, the initiated Bill deals with the transformation of the rule of the party financing.

"In our view, the current rule of direct funding of political parties by the state should be suspended and fundamentally transformed. Each citizen should be able to decide which party may receive funding from the taxes”, - Gia Zhorzholiani stated at today’s briefing.

As he pointed out, pursuant to the current legislation, the parties are directly funded from the state budget, which in turn is supplemented by the taxpayers, and this rule should be amended.

"The Current rule doesn’t foresee the position and interest of citizens. The given Bill allows the taxpayers to judge which political party may receive 0.3% of their income tax each year. Citizens can choose their preferred political party, which will receive funds from them. They may refuse to choose any political party as well”, - G/ Zhorzholiani noted.

The leader of Social-Democrats believes that the implementation of this initiative will increase the relationship between political parties and citizens, which is important and necessary for the democratic development of the country.

As a result, political parties will have to be more active despite the pre-election period.

As G. Zhorzholiani elucidated, such a model is more democratic and fair, and allows the citizens to pick the party they want to fund or stop funding.
