Online Meeting of Rati Ionatamishvili apropos of Legislative Changes on Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Online Meeting of Rati Ionatamishvili apropos of Legislative Changes on Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Chairman of the Georgian Dream Faction, Rati Ionatamishvili, discussed the norms and innovations envisaged by the legislative amendments on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the format of online meeting with interested persons.

The meeting, which was attended by representatives of about 30 civil society organizations, including the Public Defender's Office and the International Organization for Migration, discussed the draft-related recommendations.

"The Parliament is elaborating on the Bill on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the draft has already been adopted with two readings. About 50 organizations expressed 41 recommendations regarding the Bill, 35 of which have been shared by the Parliament. Accordingly, 85% of the recommendations and initiatives have already been reflected in the document, which is quite high. There are a number of issues that need additional work and consultations and we are committed to actively cooperate in this process. It should be noted that the process is quite transparent and is carried out with a high standard of involvement. During the online meeting, certain organizations still expressed some criticism, but failed to present tangible legal arguments. It is important for us to continue working on the Bill, because many people with disabilities are waiting for the adoption of the law in our country”, - Rati Ionatamishvili remarked.

The Bill is to be adopted with the III reading during this week’s Extraordinary Plenary Session.
