Parliament Supported Amendment Providing for the Gradual Introduction of New School Textbooks

The Parliament of Georgia supported, by 77 votes, an amendment to the Law of Georgia on General Education that provides for the gradual introduction of new school textbooks.
The draft law was presented at the plenary session at its I reading, under an expedited procedure, by Tamar Makharashvili, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth.
The bill envisages the phased introduction of school textbooks developed by the Ministry into the educational process during the 2026–2027 and 2027–2028 academic years, according to specific grades and subjects.
Under the draft law, from 1 September 2028, general education institutions will be required to conduct educational activities exclusively using textbooks developed by the Ministry and/or approved by the Ministry.
Accordingly, the process of developing school textbooks and introducing them into the teaching and learning process will be implemented gradually and will be fully completed before the beginning of the 2028–2029 academic year.
