Parliament Adopted Amendments to the Law on General Education

The Parliament of Georgia considered and adopted, at III reading, amendments to the Law of Georgia on General Education by 80 votes, concerning the recognition of general education obtained while studying abroad.
The legislative package was presented at the plenary session by Zviad Gabisonia, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth.
According to the draft law, the recognition of general education obtained during studies abroad will no longer fall within the competence of the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement and will instead become entirely the responsibility of the relevant general education institution.
In addition to a document certifying the completion of full general education, it will also become possible to equate a document certifying education obtained under a foreign-recognized general education programme with a document certifying basic education.
Furthermore, students enrolled in a foreign-recognized general education programme will be entitled to exercise their right to mobility in accordance with the procedures established by legislation. At the same time, legal entities operating foreign-recognized general education programmes in Georgia will become subject to the authorization process.
The amendment does not apply to the recognition of complete general education obtained abroad.
The recognition of full general education obtained abroad will continue to be carried out by the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement.
