Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee Reviews Amendments to Laws on General and Vocational Education

At a meeting of the Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee, proposed amendments to the Laws of Georgia on General and Vocational Education, submitted by the Government through legislative initiative, were reviewed.
Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Tamar Ghvamichava, stated that under the proposed amendments to the Law on General Education, graduates of secondary vocational programmes that integrate the outcomes of upper secondary general education will receive, alongside a diploma, an official certificate of complete general education (attestat).
Additionally, individuals who, during the 2024–2025 academic year, complete the basic level of general education (Grade IX) through external examination and whose age corresponds to or exceeds the typical age group for Grade X, will continue their education in the appropriate class of the upper secondary level from the 2024–2025 academic year onward.
The Deputy Minister also discussed amendments to the Law on Vocational Education.
“A person will no longer be required to submit, within three months of enrolment in a vocational programme, a certificate confirming completion of basic or full general education—or an equivalent qualification—provided that the attainment of the corresponding level of general education is recorded in the vocational education management information system", - Tamar Ghvamichava stated.
According to her, the amendments will also establish a legal basis for determining procedures for recognising vocational qualifications obtained in the occupied territories, as well as for issuing permits to implement vocational teacher training programmes.
The Committee supported the proposed amendments.
