Parliament of Georgia Presiding GUAM PA

On December 20-21, under the presidency of the Parliament of Georgia, the GUAM Parliamentary Assembly was held in a virtual format.

Giorgi Khelashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly, briefed his colleagues on human rights violations in the occupied territories of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali and spoke about the economic difficulties exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the government's effective work in this area. In his speeches, the Head of the Georgian delegation expanded on the Eastern Partnership platform and its high importance for the region, as well as the fruitful cooperation of the GUAM countries with the Baltic states.

David Matikashvili, a member of the Georgian delegation, took part in the work of the Parliamentary Assembly. In his speech, the MP dwelt on the trends and future plans for the further economic recovery of the pandemic.

The Assembly discussed important issues such as the outcome of the Eastern Partnership Summit, the future perspective of the Crimean Platform, and the ongoing territorial conflicts in the regions of the GUAM member states.

At the end of the session, the parties adopted a concluding document, a communiqué on economic cooperation between the member states and security in the region.

GUAM Secretary General Altai Efendiev and a delegation of the Baltic Assembly took part in the work of the Assembly together with the parliamentary delegations of Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Azerbaijan.

The GUAM PA will be chaired by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in 2022.
