Shalva Papuashvili: It is critical that Holocaust awareness is maintained at all times and in all generations

Chairman of Parliament 27 Jan 2022
Shalva Papuashvili: It is critical that Holocaust awareness is maintained at all times and in all generations

"The atrocity that murdered millions in the twentieth century must not be repeated, but must be continually comprehended and clarified”, - Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, stated in a speech commemorating International Day.

The Speaker addressed the audience about the centuries-long affinity between the Georgian and Jewish peoples, as well as the Holocaust, which he described as one of the most painful tragedies in human history.

"The International Holocaust Remembrance Day has been designated by the United Nations General Assembly on January 27th, and we, the Parliament, are participating for the first time this year. It is critical that Holocaust knowledge is preserved at all times and in all generations”, - Sh. Papuashvili added, "since the horror that killed millions of people in the twentieth century should not be repeated, but should be constantly comprehended and defined”.

According to him, the Georgian and Jewish peoples have been brothers for 26 centuries, and our past on this land is a shared history and culture.

H.E. Ran Gidor, Israel's Ambassador to Georgia, also spoke to the audience.

For the first time this year, a ceremony commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day was organized in the Georgian Parliament.
