We, the women Members of Parliament, women MPs express our solidarity to all the women that fell the victims of sexual harassment or other types of violations of their rights.
We strongly condemn the recent intensive and unending attacks on Tatia Samkharadze through violence and propaganda – a woman who, by being brave and valiant, managed to break the taboo – she has created the first precedent of the identification of the fact of sexual harassment and the legal response thereto.
We strongly condemn the statements made by the leaders of the ruling party concerning this and other facts of supposed harassment disclosed by four more women during the recent days – they have also publicly exposed Shalva Ramishvili who is already exposed by the courts of two instances in re the Harassment against Tatia Samkharadze.
The Government has broken its silence during the latest days, which we have already witnessed in other cases, and expressed its open support to the harasser and thus hints to all the victims of violence and discrimination to get mute, and encourage the offenders.
It is totally unacceptable for us that the authorities, to distribute their message, referred to the parliamentary podium; it is also unacceptable the position of the Chair of the Gender Equality Council, who is the figure assuming the special responsibility to facilitate the creation of not only the legal basis for protection of rights of women but the due milieu for the enforcement of the laws.
In recent days, we witnessed the most perilous and vicious facts when the state institutions have been used for the protection of the reputation of the offender and punishment of the victim, as well as for the persecution of the victims and re-initiation of the false narratives. It is absolutely unacceptable, when with the motive of protection of rights and order, the state agencies intrude on the flats/houses of the citizens.
The hereof incident even further deepens our suspicion about the abuse of the state leverages for the illegal surveillance and tapping and protection of party interests. The fact that the person officially exposed by the Court as the harasser, publicly menaces to disclose the personal data and privacy of the persons who have exposed him, and thus, demonstrates the fact of impunity and inviolability, which reveals complete incapability of the authorities and the law.
We demand that the investigative bodies scrutinize and give a legal assessment to the persecution and operation against Tatia Samkharadze and also give their legal assessment to the accusations echoed by other women about the harassment by Shalva Ramishvili, including the covert record aired by the TV Company “Formula”.
We also call on the Public Defender to express his public position about the current developments and call on him to ensure the legal response as envisaged under the law and his mandate – protect the rights of Tatia Samkharadze since we deal with a clear continuous violation of the anti-discriminative law, namely, Tatia Samkharadze is under persecution and pressure since she has exposed the fact of sexual harassment and won the legal dispute.
