Briefing by MP Gia Zhorzholiani

The Member of Parliament, Gia Zhorzholiani held the briefing in response to the document published by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIIR) regarding the draft amendments to the Election Code of Georgia.

The Public Defender's Office submitted the draft amendments to the organization.

Confirming to the MP, the OSCE message exhibits two main areas of interest: one that the country should make its own decision on the electoral system and the other - the decision should be accomplished at least a year before the elections.

G. Zhorzholiani reiterated the Social-Democrats’ unwavering support for the proportional electoral system - “We believe that the Majority's rejection of its own proposal has made it very difficult to hold fair and objective elections. It is clear that the Georgian Dream did badly, irresponsibly, but this cannot be offset by the fate of the elections and the country. We call on all parties, including those participating in so-called “dialogue” process, to urgently take a decision on the issue and commence a healthy discussion about the existing socio-economic conditions, alternative policies and the follow-up perspectives”.

According to the MP, the Social-Democrats find the way out for inclusive, fair and equitable electoral environment through serious changes applied to the electoral rule.

This refers to the propaganda of election subjects in the media, the rules for staffing election commissions, party financing and more.

"We have already introduced a bill envisaging the equal airtime distribution for the election subjects and we intend to submit even more in the near future”, - G. Zhorzholiani noted and appealed to the political parties and the Parliament to take appropriate decisions, which will enable the population to take full responsibility in making the decision for the fate of the country.
