
Irakli Medzmariashvili, the Chairman of the Sports and Youth Issues Committee, held a meeting with His Excellency Imamura Akura, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan, to discuss the participation of Georgian athletes in upcoming international tournaments to be held in Japan. The focus of the discussion was particularly on the sumo and basketball world championships.
The parties also addressed the organization of joint sports exchange programs. The Japanese diplomat informed that in September, a delegation of Japanese women rugby players will visit Georgia to engage in joint training sessions.
Furthermore, the development of sumo in Georgia was a topic of discussion during the meeting. It was acknowledged that the Japanese side is prepared to support Georgian youth in their pursuit of studying sumo, including the provision of preparatory courses in specialized sumo schools in Japan. Mr. Medzmariashvili expressed his appreciation for the initiative and expressed his intention to further explore this opportunity by engaging with the President of the Sumo Federation in Georgia.
