
At a meeting of the Culture Committee, members heard information regarding the activities and planned initiatives of the LEPL National Library of Georgia named after Ilia Chavchavadze.
The General Director of the National Library, Konstantine Gamsakhurdia, spoke about restoration and rehabilitation works implemented and planned at the Library, and focused on the process of updating and replenishing the Library’s collections.
Konstantine Gamsakhurdia also discussed the “Giant Books” project, noting that within the framework of the project, the complete set of the issues of the newspaper Iveria for 1887 was published. According to him, the project will continue in 2026.
As the presenter noted, the Electronic Resources Laboratory was expanded in 2025. He further stated that in 2026, the opening of the “Gratitude Exhibition” and the publication of the scientific journal “Librarium” are planned at the National Library.
Deputy Director of the National Library, Mirian Khositashvili, briefed the members of the Committee on publishing activities and ongoing work related to the introduction of artificial intelligence in the library sector.
He placed particular emphasis on the national model for the development of multifunctional libraries. As he noted, there are currently 834 libraries registered within Georgia’s library network, including 662 rural libraries, 107 urban libraries, and 65 principal municipal libraries. According to him, the National Library’s goal is to transform regional libraries into multifunctional community centers.
The Chair of the Culture Committee, Giorgi Gabunia, positively assessed the presented report, stating that strengthening municipal libraries is of particular importance.
