At a plenary session on 4 February 2026, Parliament considered in the first reading and approved, by 84 votes in favor and 10 against, the amendments to the Law “On Legal Aid.”
The draft law was presented by the Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee, Archil Gorduladze.
According to the amendments, the Legal Aid Service will be accountable to the Prime Minister of Georgia, and the Director of the Service will submit a report on the Service’s activities for the previous year to the Prime Minister.
The authority to appoint the Director of the Legal Aid Service is vested in the Prime Minister.
“Independence of the lawyer is recognized and guaranteed by the Constitution of Georgia, and any interference entails criminal liability. The proposed amendment concerns the appointment of the head of an institution—that is, the service provider—by a specific political official,” - Archil Gorduladze stated.
