Parliament Endorsing Changes to Election Code

The Parliament endorsed the amendments to the Election Code by 88 votes to 3, amending the Article 203 of the Code in the context of the gender quotation rule.

According to the law, the period of validity of the regulatory norms of gender quotation will be valid until the elections to be held in October 2032.

Additionally, according to the current version, if a female elected deputy or member of the City Assembly is dismissed, regardless of where on the list she is on, the next female takes her place, and if a male representative is dismissed, a man takes his place. In order to further strengthen the gender quotas, it has been decided that in the event that a male representative is dismissed, whoever is on the list—who may be both a man and a woman—will fill the appropriate vacancy.

According to the initiators, the document will improve the situation of gender equality by helping to increase the representation of women in Georgia's representative bodies.

The initiators of the bill are MPs: Givi Mikanadze, Baia Kvitsiani, Greta Tsitsava, Nino Tsilosani, Ramina Beradze, Irma Zavradashvili, Mariam Lashkhi, Ketevan Dumbadze, and Maia Menagharishvili.
