
The members of the Georgia-USA Friendship Group held a meeting with the US Congress Delegation serving a visit to Georgia.
The parties discussed the Georgia-USA relations, further enhancement of the bipartisan support in the Congress to Georgia and the US Defense Authorization Act 2021 where a standalone subchapter is dedicated to Georgia.
“The Congressmen asked about further cooperation aspects to establish closer relations between the Republican and Democratic parties in the US Congress and enhance the bipartisan support to Georgia”, - the First Deputy Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, Giorgi Khelashvili stated.
Georgian MPs, when serving a visit to Washington, will strive to achieve higher levels of the relations with the USA, he added and noted that the US Defense Authorization Act 2021 edition belongs to the Congressman for the State Georgia, Austin Scott with a special subchapter dedicated to Georgia.
“The document underlines the strategic cooperation with Georgia, support in enhancement of the sovereignty against Russia, and in terms of the regional peace, Black Sea security and democratic resistance”, - he noted.
Congressman Alex Mooney dwelt on the importance of the amendments adopted by the Assignment Committee.
“I was pleased to see the US Congress and its Committee adopting the amendment providing the support to Georgia similar to the Georgia Support Act, which we share to support Georgia against the Russian aggression and support good international relations, namely, keep supporting the NATO accession of Georgia and more free trade. At the Ambassador, we discussed the development of the financial corporation and the opportunity of the opening of its office to attract more investments from Georgia and encourage the free trade and economic development in the country”, - the Congressman stated.
According to him, America is aware of the steps taken by Georgia in international relations and cooperation with the European partners.
“As to the USA – we need friends in this part of the world. Georgia was an excellent partner in military operations. We share the concern and anxiety of Georgia. My mother is from Cuba and the Communists conquered their country. We know that now, 20% of the territories of Georgia is occupied by Russia and we are deeply concerned”, - he added hoping for another visit to Georgia.
“I visit Georgia together with my two colleagues to meet our friends. I feel at home here. This is my second visit to Georgia, the first visit was served two years ago along with Adam Kinzinger and I hope to be back soon. We are hosted by the USA-Georgia Association, which facilitates the development of the good relations between two countries”, - Congressman stated.
After the meeting, the Congressmen had a tour in the Plenary Hall and saw the part of the strategic bombardier wing dropped during Russia-Georgia War 2008.
The meeting was attended by the members of the Georgia-USA Friendship Group, Maka Bochorishvili, Irakli Beraia, Giorgi Khelashvili and Irakli Chikovani.
