As the Parliamentary Political Group Girchi calls for the setup of Interim Fact-Finding Commission on Abuse of Authority of the President of the National Bank of Georgia and Deliberate Actions to Disrupt Price Stability, Aleksandre Rakviashvili held a briefing today.
"We have made the decision to create an interim fact-finding commission, the focus of which will be the National Bank and commercial banks' coordinated action. A considerable rise in the money supply by the National Bank of Georgia in 2020–2021 was reflected in double-digit inflation in the second half of 2021. Commercial banks achieved historic profits thanks to the expansion of the money supply. There is a plausible suspicion that the National Bank's duty to ensure price stability was abandoned in order to support the banking sector given that representatives of commercial banks and their connected organizations adhered to its policies during this time”, - Aleksandre Rakviashvili remarked.
According to him, there is a violation of Article 68 of the Constitution, which obliges the Parliament to investigate the circumstances of the mentioned decisions.
Parliamentary political group Girchi plans to publicly question the persons related to the case in order to study the issue within 3 months in the format of an interim fact-finding commission.
According to Aleksandre Rakviashvili, after studying the case, the parliamentary political group Girchi will develop recommendations, publish the relevant conclusion and, if necessary, will respond accordingly.
Aleksandre Rakviashvili called on his colleagues to support their initiative.
"It is challenging to establish such an interim commission when there aren't many of us in the opposition. Regardless of their political views, we urge all parties, lawmakers, and independent MPs to back me so that we can establish this interim panel as soon as possible in September”, - the MP stated.
