Shalva Papuashvili: Our task is to introduce the changes and the motivation behind them to the public

"Our task is to introduce the changes and the motivation behind them to the public. We believe it is important to regulate these issues in the constitution and to listen to the attitudes and opinions of the population", – the Speaker, H.E. Shalva Papuashvili stated at the public discussion regarding the constitutional drafts "On Amendments to the Constitution of Georgia" and "On Family Values and Protection of Minors" in Mestia.

As Shalva Papuashvili noted, the constitutional amendments refer to issues of family values and protection of minors.

"In general, the structure of a democratic state hinges on a fundamental principle: the people are the source of power. Through elections, the people grant a temporary mandate to their representative body—the parliament—to enact laws and establish a legal framework for the state's development. However, our constitution stipulates that there are certain matters where this mandate alone is not entirely adequate, and direct consultation with the people and society is necessary. These pertain to fundamental, principled issues related to societal values and the basic principles of state organization, all of which are enshrined in our constitution”, - Sh. Papuashvili noted.

According to the Speaker, the Steering Commission started its work on April 17, and the review of the initiative presented by the parliamentary majority will be held in different cities of Georgia within a month.
