V. Khmaladze, Sh. Shavgulidze and T. Kordzaia met with Juan Mendez. The parties spoke about the law regulating the issues on torture and inhuman treatment in Georgia, compliance thereof with international standards.

MPs noted that there are problems with complete implementation of all the requirements requiring the number of legislative changes and in this term the reform of the Prosecutor’s system is being developed to improve the oversight functions of the PO and achieve the better quality of Parliamentary oversight on PO.

J. Mendez expressed recommendation to allow the Judge appoint the expert examination even in the event, if it is not required by any of the parties but he/she has the reasonable doubt that the person has undergone torture or inhuman treatment.

Currently the Georgian legislation does not allow the Judge on such decision-making if not demanded by the party.
