Maka Botchorishvili: we need to open the European perspectives and establish new formats in the EU-Georgia relations

The 10th EU-Georgia PAC sitting is held in the European Parliament in Brussels co-chaired by Maka Botchorishvili and Marina Kaljurand.

The attendees discussed the EU-Georgia cooperation agenda, achieved progress and further perspectives.

“Despite the aggravated security situation, pandemic-related challenges and the protracted occupation of Georgian territories by Russia, as well as the hybrid threats, Georgia, being the EU associated partner, undertakes the wide range of the democratic and institutional reforms necessary for the political association and economic integration to the EU. We need to fully master the immense Association Agreement potential and we are committed to putting the gradual, political, economic and sector integration with the EU and the integration to the EU market to a higher level”, - M. Botchorishvili stated.

She emphasized the role of the Parliament in the EUAA implementation and overviewed the respective legal changes and initiatives.

The Parliamentary Delegation dwelt on the consolidation of the democratic reforms and the protection of fundamental freedoms in Georgia, EUAA and DCFTA implementation etc.

The attendees touched upon the Georgia-EU sector integration process and discussed the steps taken for the integration to the EU digital market, as well as the environmental protection and the European Green Deal.

“The Association Agreement is not enough for the EU integration but we need to open the European perspectives and establish new formats in the EU-Georgia relations. It requires the facilitation of expert and political dialogue at various levels. The intensification of the dialogue became evident after Georgia scheduled the certain steps to the EU and made a decision on the membership application in 2024”, - M.Botchorishvili stated.

The executive officials delivered their speeches at the sitting concerning the situation on the occupied territories of Georgia and the peacekeeping policy.

MEPs reaffirmed their intact support to the sovereignty, territorial integrity of Georgia and the non-recognition of the Georgian territories occupied by Russia. Georgian MPs answered the questions of MEPs.

The next EU-Georgia PAC sitting is scheduled in Tbilisi in autumn 2022.
