During his visit to Italy, Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee Nikoloz Samkharadze met with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

One of the key topics discussed during the meeting was Georgia’s European integration process. Cardinal Pietro Parolin expressed interest in the existing challenges within these relations.

The parties also discussed the situation in Georgia’s occupied regions — Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region.

The discussion additionally focused on Georgia’s important peacebuilding role in both the resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and the broader process of ensuring regional security.

On the same day, the Georgian parliamentary delegation held an audience with Pope Leo XIV.

The meetings were also attended by First Deputy Chair of the Legal Issues Committee Tornike Cheishvili and Georgia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Holy See (Vatican) Davit Mekvabishvili.
