The validity of the Interim Fact-Finding Commission extended by one more month

Plenary 28 მაისი 2025
The validity of the Interim Fact-Finding Commission extended by one more month

The Parliament extended the validity period of the The Interim Fact-Finding Commission on the Activities of the Regime, the Political Leaders of the Regime of 2003-2012 and the Activity of the Incumbent and Former Officials in the Political Unions since 2003 up to today by one more month - to July 5, with 86 votes.

Prior to the adoption of the Resolution, the Chair of the Commission, Tea Tsulukiani introduced the second interim report encompassing the period of February 13, 2025-May 23, 2025.

According to her, the Commission has already convened over 30 public sittings and questioned more than 100 persons; furthermore, over 500 applications out of 600, submitted to the Commission, have already been scrutinized, most of which provide the facts of torture and inhuman treatment, or the deprivation of property and business.

As Tea Tsulukiani highlighted, the extension of the validity of the Commission shall, first of all, cover the period of 2013-2025.

“The six topics assigned to us by Parliament are extensive. The final topic covers the period from 2013 to 2025. We are tasked with studying all the detrimental activities that the political leaders of the preceding government or individuals who are still affiliated with political parties committed against the nation, both domestically and especially internationally. This topic was submitted to the Commission in April 2025, necessitating additional time as we must engage in extensive questioning of numerous individuals”, - she stated.

According to her, the five topics assigned to the Commission: murders, torture, inhuman treatment, business racket, corruption, freedom of media and the August war of 2008 are thoroughly investigated.

“The forthcoming month will be allocated exclusively to the meticulous development of the documents and the preliminary conclusion. We anticipate submitting the conclusion to the Commission during the period from July 4th to 5th, contingent upon the absence of any unforeseen obstacles. Should no impediments arise, we will have an additional month for operational activities. It is also noteworthy that, even if the legislation stipulates an extended period for the Commission, it would still not suffice to comprehensively address the capacity of the evil, we are aware of or are gradually becoming aware of”, - she stated.

According to her, the Commission intends to visit Khoni next month to inspect the former penitentiary department, which is the sole remaining facility with preserved cells from the Saakashvili era.
