Parliament Endorsing Establishment of Guria National Park

Plenary 29 May 2024
Parliament Endorsing Establishment of Guria National Park

With 78 votes, the Parliament adopted the bill on the Creation and Management of the Guria National Park.

The issue was presented for a third reading at the plenary session by Nino Tandilashvili, the First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, who stated that the bill includes editorial changes.

With the adoption of this bill, a new protected area, the Guria National Park, will be established on the territories of the Chokhatauri and Ozurgeti municipalities. Accordingly, the bill defines the location, area, and boundaries of the Guria National Park.

The bill regulates relationships concerning the management, protection, and use of the territory and other natural resources allocated to the Guria National Park, as well as historical and cultural sites.

The project also addresses issues related to the state management of the Guria National Park, its protection and usage regime, property relations, and the utilization of land, mineral resources, and oil and gas resources.

Experts believe that the establishment of the Guria National Park will contribute to the protection of biodiversity, the creation of eco-corridors, the development of ecological networks, and the involvement of the local population in eco-tourism services. The adoption of this bill is crucial because the planned Guria National Park is an area of particular importance for biodiversity conservation. It is listed as a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) under the updated Caucasus Ecoregion Conservation Plan (ECP 2020), specifically under the name "Bakhmaro”.
