Parliament supported introduction of State Minister post for coordination of law enforcement bodies within the Government of Georgia

The Parliament of Georgia, in the first reading and under an accelerated procedure, reviewed and supported the amendment to the Law of Georgia “On the Structure, Powers and Rules of Activity of the Government of Georgia” with 83 votes in favor and 12 against.
The draft law provides for the introduction of the position of State Minister of Georgia for the Coordination of Law Enforcement Bodies within the composition of the Government of Georgia.
According to the reporter, Parliamentary Secretary of the Government of Georgia Vakhtang Bachiashvili, the activities of law enforcement bodies and their coordination fall within the constitutional authority of the Government of Georgia and are also reflected in the governmental program.
“The functioning of law enforcement bodies ensures the stable and sustainable development of the country and is important for addressing a wide range of challenges facing the state. Recent personnel changes have intensified the activities of law enforcement agencies, which are currently carried out both through the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which is part of the Government, and through special-purpose state institutions such as the State Security Service and the Special State Protection Service. The introduction of such a coordination mechanism within the executive branch will enhance and further increase the effectiveness of law enforcement activities. At the same time, within the powers of the State Minister, cooperation will be ensured with constitutional bodies such as the State Audit Office, the Prosecutor’s Office system, and the judicial branch of Georgia”, - Vakhtang Bachiashvili stated.
