Joint Statement of MPs: Sozar Subari, Dimitri Khundadze, Guram Macharashvili, and Mikheil Kavelashvili
A letter regarding the US agency working in Georgia was released a few days ago in a number of Georgian media sources. This letter might not have any exciting news for the vast majority of society. People who are more or less interested in politics are well aware of how, since the end of the 1990s, the US Embassy has forced Shevardnadze to allow its citizens to participate in almost all state structures, how dozens of NGOs were established and provided with the necessary tools to organize the "Rose Revolution," and how the vertical structure of the government was established following the revolution and was completely controlled by the embassy from 2004 to 2012.
As a result, whereas operatives of the Russian special services posed the greatest threat to Georgia's sovereignty in the 1980s and 1990s, the USA agency also posed a significant threat to sovereignty in the 2000s. Additionally, if we examine the list of agents, we will see that many times, certain politicians in the American special services have directly transferred into those services from Russia. This fact alone shows that the spy is working for another country not because of his political leanings but rather because of his lack of integrity and patriotism.
The fact that the principal figures in the administration that emerged following the "Rose Revolution" held a particular position within the American agency would not come as a surprise to a sizable portion of the population. Our evidence indicates that in 2013, two of them managed to avoid capture specifically due to the embassy's pressure, even though the prosecutor's office had fully prepared criminal cases against them. We think that the public has a thorough understanding of the motivations of various former and present NGO leaders. The agency was also quite strongly represented in the coalition that formed the 2012 administration, which is why Americans became accustomed to the "Georgian Dream" gaining power fairly quickly.
Today, the majority of these individuals are found in the "National Movement" and other extreme opposition groups. We can tell that they are all working hard to advance, even if some of them must be currently low-ranking agents.
It goes without saying that we could not be naive or believe that a large nation like the United States of America would operate in a tiny nation like Georgia without a network of agencies. Here are two things to consider:
First, the message that only the agent of Russia is bad and the agent of America is good, which the representatives of the radical opposition have repeatedly sneaked into us in a direct form, is completely unacceptable. Being an agent of a partner state is just as treasonous and dishonorable as being an agent of an occupying state. Therefore, if there is a certain rational explanation for the creation of the agency network by the Americans, the agency of the Georgians will not have the slightest justification;
Second, it is particularly disturbing that the embassy is using its agency today to polarize, change the government against the will of the people, and try to open a second front. No one can convince us that the agents, in this case, are only following the embassy blindly and are not deliberately harming the country. This fact shows the worthlessness of agents with special intensity.
We would want to make it clear that the list of agents included in the letter that was published is incomplete and needs some minor revisions. The list, however, only includes the names of individuals whose standing prevents them from becoming the focus of any meaningful social debate. If necessary, we will share further information about agents with the public so that they have as much knowledge as possible about individuals who, in reality, work for another state rather than their own.
In this case too, our goal is not to expose someone personally, but to share the truth with the people and thereby protect the interests of our country and state, which was our main promise to Georgian society. We deeply believe that the current threats can be neutralized only by the power of the people equipped with the truth.
