Meeting of Opposition MPs with the Experts on Gelati Monastery Issues

The Opposition MPs held a meeting, organized by the PG “Lelo – Partnership for Georgia” with the experts to discuss Gelati Monastery issues. MPs heard the recent information about the restoration of the Monastery.
According to the PG “Lelo – Partnership for Georgia” MP, Ana Natsvlishvili, the restorations on Gelati Monastery shall be publicly issued since the decisions made in camera pose a threat of irrevocable damage to the monument.
“The acute problem is that the restoration of the Monastery is held in militarized-classified order. The Culture Minister and the Ministry refuse to disclose information and answer the questions of MPs, which is a breach of the Constitution. The contextual and the financial parts of the process, revealing the course and quality of the restoration are to be transparent. We agreed to hold active cooperation with the field specialists to rescue the Monastery and prevent the destruction of a unique cultural monument of Georgia. In this view, we planned further steps. Partially, we touched upon the possible actions today. It is crucial to prevent the Government to classify this process and we shall strive to maintain this issue in our agenda within and beyond the Parliament”, - she noted.
