Chairman of Parliament 27 Oct 2025
Shalva Papuashviili attended the opening of the Memorial Plaque of Anzor Erkomaishvili

The Speaker of the Parliament, H.E. Shalva Papuashvili, attended the opening of the Memorial Plaque of the famous Georgian folk musician, choirmaster, singer, publicist and scientist, Anzor Erkomaishvili, in Tbilisi.

“It is important to honour those who have made an exceptional contribution to Georgian culture, history and future.

Anzor Erkomaishvili was greatly respected during his lifetime and his memory requires daily care and remembrance. As new generations grow up, some may not be aware of his immense service to our country and this memorial plaque serves to remind us of that.

Mr Erkomaishvili’s merit and legacy extend beyond his role as a choir leader, collector and promoter of folk songs, founder of ensembles and mentor of new generations. He became an integral part of Georgian folk song. This is perhaps the highest achievement a creative person can attain. His work is a national treasure.

Anzor Erkomaishvili’s contribution to nurturing a love for Georgian culture among children is also noteworthy. From an early age, exposure to folk songs became an integral part of a child’s upbringing and cultural development. Erkomaishvili recognised the significance of this when he founded the ensemble Martve. This culture and tradition are closely associated with his name and are now a truly national heritage.

I would like to express my gratitude to the Ministry of Culture of Georgia and Tbilisi City Hall for honoring and respecting the name of Anzor Erkomaishvili.
And, of course, I especially wish to greet his family — his great family, represented by the ensembles “Martve” and “Rustavi” — and all those who cherish his name, continue his legacy, and pass it on to future generations”, - the Speaker stated.

The Memorial Plaque was installed at the house on N23 Abano Street in the Krtsanisi district, where Anzori Erkomaishvili resided from 1988 to 2021. The opening of the Memorial Plaque was attended by: the representatives of the legislative and executive authorities, the Tbilisi City Hall and the Tbilisi City Assembly.

Anzor Erkomaishvili was the leader of the Ensemble “Rustavi” since 1968. He has published the Georgian folk songs that he has recorded and deciphered and has prepared the compendium “Folk Songs of Guria” for publication.

Anzor Erkomaishvili was awarded the Presidential Order of Excellence and the Tbilisi Honorary Citizen status. He was also awarded the Ivane Javakhishvili International Prize, Shota Rustaveli State Award, Ilia Chavchavadze Award, Ekvtime Takaishvili Award, Iakob Gogebashvili Award, and the Albert Schweitzer Prize.
