Meeting of Shalva Papuashvili with the Delegation of the EU Special Envoys

Chairman of Parliament 07 Nov 2023
Meeting of Shalva Papuashvili with the Delegation of the EU Special Envoys

The Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, H.E. Shalva Papuashvili, held a meeting with a delegation of special envoys from the EU and EU member states on the Eastern Partnership.

Shalva Papuashvili emphasized the significance of the delegation's visit as a demonstration of support for Georgia, particularly on the eve of the publication of the European Commission's report. During the meeting, he discussed the Parliament's efforts aimed at implementing the 12 recommendations of the European Union, highlighting the achieved results and expectations. He pointed out that Georgia's progress is reflected in influential international rankings related to the rule of law, transparency, and other areas.

The Speaker of the Parliament stressed the importance of the European Union making a strategic decision to support Georgia's continued progress on its path toward EU membership. He emphasized that this decision holds significance not only for Georgia but also for the entire region.

Dirk Schuebel, the EU's special envoy for the Eastern Partnership, expressed his anticipation for the publication of the European Commission's opinion. He outlined the delegation's visit's purpose, which is to discuss how the Eastern Partnership can contribute to Georgia's integration into the European Union. Schuebel also highlighted the two main priorities of the Eastern Partnership: strengthening connectivity and promoting security. He mentioned the potential involvement of Central Asian countries in Eastern Partnership meetings.

The meeting's discussion also covered topics such as the future of the Eastern Partnership, regional peace issues, recent political developments in Georgia, the occupation of two regions of Georgia, and the importance of sharing experiences among countries, particularly at the parliamentary level.
