Shalva Papuashvili: Georgia and Azerbaijan have always played an instrumental role in guaranteeing regional peace

Chairman of Parliament 19 Apr 2022
Shalva Papuashvili: Georgia and Azerbaijan have always played an instrumental role in guaranteeing regional peace

"Georgia and Azerbaijan have always played an instrumental role in guaranteeing regional peace - we agree that both countries should employ this historic role and jointly and with greater efforts to promote peace and stability for the well-being of our countries, our peoples and the region in general”, - the Speaker commented following the meeting with the Speaker of the Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Sahiba Gafarova.

According to Shalva Papuashvili, the visit of his Azerbaijani counterpart is symbolic and of special significance, as this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Speaker expanded on the issues discussed at the meeting and in this context focused on the important role of Georgia and Azerbaijan in ensuring peace in the region.

"We discussed the strategic partnership between our countries and historical inter-people ties. We are grateful for the strong support of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. I also reaffirmed Georgia's intact support for the territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Ms. Gafarova's visit is symbolic and of special significance, as this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Republic of Azerbaijan. 30 years of cooperation have yielded tangible results for our countries and citizens. Cooperation is developing dynamically in various sectors, including economics, tourism, energy, transport and others. We are committed to continuing this positive trend and strive to deepen the strategic partnership between our countries. We discussed strengthening parliamentary ties, including between friendship groups and sectoral committees. Enhanced cooperation in this direction and holding more visits and meetings will make a significant contribution to the further development of our bilateral relations. During the meeting, we also noted the tense situation in the region, Russian aggression against Ukraine, and regional conflicts. Georgia and Azerbaijan have always played an instrumental role in guaranteeing regional peace”, - Shalva Papuashvili stated.

The Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia thanked Sahiba Gafarova for her visit and commitment to enhanced cooperation.
