The Legal Norms on Carrying Melee Weapons to be amended

Plenary 16 Nov 2022
The Legal Norms on Carrying Melee Weapons to be amended

The Draft Code of Administrative Offenses envisaging the change of the norms related to the carrying of the melee weapons was introduced by the Deputy Interior Minister, Alexander Darakhvelidze to the Parliament with the I reading.

“As of present, the carrying of the melee weapon is subject to the penalty under the administrative, as well as the criminal norms – the first offense is subject to the penalty of 200 GEL, recurrence – 1000 GEL or 15 days of administrative detention, and the third offense – criminal liability. New stricter norms increase the penalty of 200 GEL to 500 GEL without mentioning the recurrence. The norms also envisage confiscation of melee weapons. As a result of an analysis of the current situation, it was revealed that compared to other countries, the native legislation is far too liberal. The European countries apply stricter sanctions. Unfortunately, crimes with melee weapons have become frequent, according to the latest statistical data, 54% of the crimes have been committed with melee weapons and thus, the legal changes aim at the prevention of the crimes that we encounter in our reality”, - the reporter noted.
