The Diaspora Committee Heard Information on the Activities Carried Out by the Consular and Diaspora Issues Department of the Foreign Affairs Ministry

At a meeting of the Diaspora Committee, information was presented on the activities carried out in 2025 by the Consular and Diaspora Issues Department of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, as well as on the planned activities for 2026.

“Since 2017, when the Ministry took over the management of relations with the diaspora, cooperation with the diaspora has become even more active and productive. Greater attention is being paid by the state to diaspora-supporting activities, including targeted programs and projects”, - stated the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Khatuna Totladze.

The speaker discussed the activities implemented during the reporting period under the coordination of the Foreign Affairs Ministry. She highlighted Diaspora Day, which is held annually on May 27 and brings together representatives of the diaspora, all branches of government, the Patriarchate, and the academic community.

Khatuna Totladze also spoke about significant programs and projects implemented abroad on the initiative of the Ministry and with the active cooperation of the Diaspora Committee. She emphasized the Sunday school support program.

“Within the framework of this program, Sunday schools are provided with the resources necessary to further motivate our compatriots, especially young people and children, to learn the Georgian language, culture, and history, and to preserve the identity that is so valuable for our compatriots living abroad”, - stated Khatuna Totladze.

She also addressed teacher training programs and a calligraphy competition, as well as programs supporting Georgian dance and song ensembles operating abroad and initiatives promoting youth activities.

“The Ministry uses all platforms to ensure that the diaspora is engaged in the policies implemented by the state, as the main slogan ‘Strong Diaspora – Strong State’ should be fully reflected in the activities planned by the Ministry”, - stated Khatuna Totladze.

According to the speaker, in 2025, alongside structural reforms implemented within the Ministry, the concept and strategy of diaspora policy were re-envisioned. A diaspora policy reform was developed, the presentation of which will take place on May 27, 2026.

As noted by the Committee Chair, Irakli Zarkua, significant progress has been achieved in the field of diaspora relations; however, challenges still remain, which will undoubtedly be addressed through new visions and approaches.
