The Education, Science and Youth Affairs Committee Reviewed Amendments to the Law ოn Public Service in the II Reading

The Education, Science and Youth Affairs Committee approved, in the II reading, amendments to the Law on Public Service.

The issue was introduced by Mindia Diasamidze, Chair of the Constitutional, Legal and Procedural Issues Committee of the Supreme Council of Ajara AR.

The amendment is of a technical nature and aims to bring the name of a ministry of the Ajara AR into compliance with current legislation. Specifically, as a result of the reorganization carried out in 2025, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of the Ajara AR was divided into two independent agencies — the Ministry of Education and Sport and the Ministry of Culture of Ajara AR.

Under the amendments, the reference in the law to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Ajara AR will be replaced with the Ministry of Education and Sport of Ajara AR.

The Committee also considered a petition submitted by Georgian citizen Mariam Bokhua, signed by more than 300 citizens, regarding a change to the age threshold for first-grade pupils for the 2026–2027 academic year.

The Committee Chair, Mariam Lashkhi, introduced the position of the Education, Science and Youth Ministry on the matter. She also reviewed existing statistical data and placed particular emphasis on the issue of school readiness.

As noted during the sitting, prior to the consideration of the petition, the Committee Chair met with the petition’s author and signatories and familiarized herself with their views.

Proceeding from the principle of safeguarding the best interests of the child, the Committee deemed it inadvisable to continue further examination and consideration of the petition.
