Media and Society 26 Nov 2003

"Nationals” and "Burjanadze-Democrats” named Mikheil Saakashvili, leader of the "National Movement” as their candidate in the Presidential Elections to be held in Georgia.

It was declared by Nino Burjanadze, the Acting President of Georgia at the briefing held on November 26. Mikheil Saakashvili and Zurab Zhvania also participated in the briefing.

As noted by Nino Burjanadze, the fight for democracy ended up with the victory of the Georgian people. " We think that now still along with each other we have to continue the fight for the future of Georgia. And it in certain extent depends on the development of events during the coming weeks. We have made a decision to together build a democratic, rightful, European values-oriented Georgia”-declared Nino Burjanadze and added that "Nationals” and "Burjanadze-Democrats” would participate in the forthcoming Presidential and Parliamentary Elections as a one team having one party list. Nino Burjanadze mentioned that this team would jointly implement the Constitutional changes and  make serious substitutions to the administration system.

Mikheil Saakashvili declared that he is ready to win the Presidential Elections. In the unfolding events he specially underlined the contribution of Nino Burjanadze and said that her name became a new figure in the revolutionary Georgia. Nino Burjanadze will head the party list of the "Nationals” and "Burjanadze-Democrats” in the forthcoming Parliamentary Elections. Mikheil Saakashvili noted that the epoch of personal administration should come to an end and that the colleague kind of administration has to save the country from the crisis.

In Mikheil Saakashvili’s opinion the main goal should become strengthening the relationship with all regions, including Adjara. He stated that the relations are to be regulated with the neighbouring states, especially with Russia. He said that they have hopes of getting help from Western friends, the guarantee of which they do already possess. Mikheil Saakashvili noted also that miracles do not happen in a day, but that they would spare no efforts to ensure the prospects of regular development for every family in Georgia.
