Hearing of Representatives of NGOs at Sitting of Interim Fact-Finding Commission

Media and Society 19 ივნისი 2021
Hearing of Representatives of NGOs at Sitting of Interim Fact-Finding Commission

The Interim Fact-Finding Commission into the October 31, 2020 Elections met with the representatives of the NGOs: the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association, Public Movement Multinational Georgia, International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, and Transparency International Georgia.

According to the chairman of the commission, Givi Mikanadze, the representatives of non-governmental organizations had question in two directions.

"One of them was the correction protocols. They did not like the amendments being made, however this was done within the format prescribed by law and no misconduct took place. On the other hand, some of the complaints of NGOs and political entities were not considered while some were upheld. In connection with the elections, political entities filed a large number of complaints. 67% of them were not considered because they were submitted either by unauthorized persons of political entities, or - in violation of the deadline. In this regard, we asked a very simple question - whether there is a purposeful, coordinated campaign to get the stakeholder to present the situation in a way that there were a lot of complaints and hence, the relevant mechanisms did not work. We have made strong arguments on this issue. In particular, the opposition parties had more than 11,000 representatives in the commissions, and only eight of them expressed their dissent in relation to the proportional elections in specific constituencies, and six in the case of majoritarian elections. This small number directly indicates that the members of a specific commission also recognize the results that were in the protocols and which they signed”, - G. Mikanadze stated.

On Monday, June 21, the Commission will hear the CEC Chair and representatives of the Prosecutor's Office.
