Parliament Terminating Nikanor Melia's MP Credentials with 79 Votes

Plenary 05 Oct 2021
Parliament Terminating Nikanor Melia's MP Credentials with 79 Votes

With 79 votes, the Parliament approved the termination of Nikanor Melia's MP credentials ahead of schedule.

Nikanor Melia addressed a letter to the Parliament on the termination of his authority on August 3, 2021, according to Irakli Kadagishvili, Chairman of the Rules and Procedural Issues Committee.

The Committee evaluated the aforementioned declaration in accordance with Georgia's Constitution and Parliamentary Rules of Procedure.

"Representatives from his team also expressed concern over Nikanor Melia’s decision. We reviewed the subject in accordance with the Constitution and legislation and came to a decision”, - Irakli Kadagishvili stated.

Along with Nikanor Melia's statement, another 50 MPs submitted petitions, according to Khatuna Samnidze, a representative of the Charles Michel Michel Reforms Group. However, none of the petitions were approved by the Parliament.

According to Irakli Kadagishvili, the aforementioned method is mandated by the regulations, and the consideration of the question of satisfying N. Melia's application falls within the timeframe set forth in the regulations' provisions.

"We took decisions that were not influenced by the political situation. The Committee reached the same finding on all those MPs during the period when you were announcing sabotage to the Parliament. It is up to the Parliament to decide whether or not to take action on this matter. In the prior situation, we did not want Georgian democracy to be hastily buried at the behest of the man who signed the Charles Michel agreement and then refused to be an MP a hundred days later. We wanted to be true to parliamentary democracy and the spirit of cooperation with international partners that has led us to this point of mediation”, - Irakli Kadagishvili said.
