Parliament Endorsing Amendments to Election Code in III Reading on Gender Quotas

In the third reading, the Parliament adopted the amendment to the Election Code by 85 votes to 22.
According to the draft law, political parties will no longer be obligated to complete their electoral lists in accordance with gender quotas. Additionally, the minimum number of candidates for membership in the Parliament of Georgia on the party list is proposed to be reduced to 30, down from the current 60.
The initiators of the bill believe that the abolition of quotas will create equal conditions and men and women will have equal rights.
"We are canceling privileges, how can cancellation of privileges be a fight against women?", - one of the initiators of the bill, Aleksandre Rakviashvili, stated.
Furthermore, the amendment extends to the Organic Law on Political Associations of Citizens, whereby the instrument of financial incentives, which provides additional financial rewards to parties for including female candidates in their lists, is to be abolished.
The initiators of these bills are members of the parliamentary political group "Girchi": Iago Khvichia, Aleksandre Rakviashivili, Vakhtangi Megrelishvili, and Herman Sabo.
