Parliament Endorsing Establishment of Machakhela Protected Landscape

The Chair of the Supreme Council of Adjara AR, David Gabaidze introduced the changes to the Code of Administrative Offenses as well as the Bill on Establishment and Management of Machakhela Protected Landscape, which the Parliament approved with 78 votes.
The adoption of the draft law is due to the initiative of the government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Khelvachauri municipality, the local population of Machakhela valley, and the financial support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
According to David Gabaidze, in order to develop the protected areas of Georgia, the Global Environmental Fund and the United Nations Development Program (GEF/UNDP) are implementing the project "Enhancing Sustainable Management of Ajara Protected Areas".
According to the rapporteur, as a result of the consultations after the second hearing, it was decided that the name of the protected area will be the Protected Area of Machakhela instead of Machakhla.
As he added, the creation of the protected landscape of Machakhela will contribute to the protection, restoration, and reasonable use of areas distinguished by biological diversity, culture, and historical features in the Machakhela valley.
