The Parliament starts the consideration of the Resolution on the De-Occupation and the Peaceful Resolution of the Russia-Georgia Conflict

The Legal Issues Committee discussed the Resolution on the De-Occupation and the Peaceful Resolution of the Russia-Georgia Conflict, confirming that the enhancement of the sovereignty of Georgia and the peaceful restoration of the territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, de-occupation of the Georgian territories and the safe and dignified return of the IDPs and refugees to their homes are the tie one priority of the country.

At that, the Resolution condemns the occupation of the Georgian regions – Abkhazia and Tskhinvali – by Russia and the actions aiming at their annexation and calls on Russia to ensure de-occupation of these regions, annual the illegal recognition of their so-called independence, terminate the violence and crimes on ethnic basis and ensure constructive engagement in the Geneva Talks.

The document gives a positive assessment of the decision of the Georgian Government to develop the national vision on de-occupation and peaceful resolution of the conflict and inclusive and comprehensive policy. By this Resolution, the Parliament of Georgia appeals to the international society to take a consistent, uniform and decision position against the occupation and annexation policy by Russia and expresses the commitment to keeping the close cooperation with the international Parliaments and Parliamentary Assemblies.

According to the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Resolution aims at the re-confirmation by the 10th Term of the Parliament that the de-occupation and peaceful resolution of the territorial integrity is a tie one priority of the country.

“The context shall as well be taken into account that Russia recently has taken the steps for the annexation of a certain settlement of Georgian territory – village Aibgha, Gagra Municipality and hence, it was urgent to include this action in the Resolution”, - he noted.

The Resolution is initiated by the Speaker, Kakha Kutchava, First Vice-Speaker Giorgi Volski, Vice-Speaker Archil Talakvadze and N. Samkharadze.
