The Parliament approved the modified excise rules on passenger vehicles

The legislative body, by 74 votes in favor and 10 against, adopted in the I reading, under an expedited procedure, amendments to the Tax Code of Georgia, which change the excise taxation rules for passenger vehicles.
According to the law, the excise rate for vehicles aged from 0 to 6 years inclusive is set at 1.5 GEL per 1 cm³ of engine capacity, while for vehicles older than 6 years it is set at 4.5 GEL per 1 cm³.
As stated by the reporter, First Deputy Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee Irakli Kheladze, the legislative amendment retains, similarly to the current regulation, special rates that differ from the base rate.
Furthermore, the amendment does not apply to vehicles that were imported into Georgia or whose transportation had commenced before April 2, 2026. In such cases, the rates in force prior to this amendment will apply.
Additionally, if a vehicle is transported by land or moves under its own power, an additional condition is established whereby the previously applicable rates will apply, provided that the vehicle enters the territory of Georgia no later than July 1, 2026.
As noted by Irakli Kheladze, the law will enter into force on April 2, 2026.
