Shalva Papuashvili: 30 years ago, Germany played a crucial role in the establishment of Georgia as a full-fledged member of the international community, and as 30 years have passed, Germany still has the capacity to play this historical mission

Chairman of Parliament 10 Jul 2023
Shalva Papuashvili: 30 years ago, Germany played a crucial role in the establishment of Georgia as a full-fledged member of the international community, and as 30 years have passed, Germany still has the capacity to play this historical mission

“Today, Georgia gets through a historical process again. 30 years ago, Germany played a crucial role in the establishment of Georgia as a full-fledged member of the international community, and as 30 years have passed, Germany still has the capacity to play this historical mission and by granting the EU candidate status to Georgia, enhance peace and welfare in our country. We hope Germany will be the leader in the process of buttressing the EU integration of Georgia”, - the Speaker, Shalva Papuashvili stated at the meeting with the President of the Parliament of Germany, Bärbel Bas.

After the meeting, the Chairpersons of the Parliaments of the two countries made joint statements for the media. Speaker Papuashvili highlighted the special role of Germany in the institutional and socio-economic transformation of Georgia.

According to him, the unwavering support of Germany that we enjoy upon the very moment of restoration of independence has benefited tangible outcomes and today, Georgia is a state achieving immense progress in building democratic institutions and democratic society.

The Speaker thanked Germany and the German people for supporting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia.

“We are delighted to witness the active dynamics of bolstering the political dialogue between our countries. In December 2022, I, being invited by the President of the German Bundestag, served a visit to Germany; in March 2023, we hosted the Federal Foreign Minister of Germany, Annalena Baerbock; a month ago the Prime Minister of Georgia held a dialogue with the Chancellor of Germany in Berlin, and today, we have a privilege to host the President of the German Bundestag in the Parliament. High-level meetings and visits, which are evident, reflect the close people-to-people relations, and our cooperation in the spheres of culture, economics, defense, education, transport, energy, science etc., that for centuries has been enriching and boosting our friendship and partnership”, - Speaker Papuashvili underlined.

He thanked the President of the German Bundestag for visiting Georgia and extended his hopes that the visit of Mme. Bas will serve as the inception of a new stage of partnership between Georgia and Germany.

“Links between Georgia and Germany are braced on the pillars – common values of democracy and peace and serve for the common goals and interests. Georgian and German soldiers have been reinforcing each other at the Mazar-i-Sharif base in Afghanistan, fighting side by side for these values and interests, for the peace and security of Europe, and for the welfare of the Georgian and German populations. I extend my sincere gratitude to the President of the Bundestag for visiting Georgia. I truly believe that her visit to Georgia will serve as the inception of a new stage of partnership between Georgia and Germany”, - Speaker Papuashvili noted.

The President of the German Bundestag accentuated close cooperation between the two countries and parliaments. Mme. Bas reaffirmed her support to the European future of Georgia.

“Last year, Georgia received the European perspective from the EU, which is an extremely bright perspective for Georgia and it was of particular importance for me in person. I am enormously impressed that the Georgian population believes to be and considers itself European. I would like to heartily encourage Georgia to keep undertaking its reforms and, on behalf of Germany, affirm that Germany supports Georgia at its European way”, - Mme. Bas underlined
