The joint briefing by the Chair of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee, Giorgi Tsagareishvili and the Chairperson of NGO “Greens Movement Friends of Earth – Georgia”, Nino Chkhobadze

The topic was management of solid wastes and process improvement measures of which the campaign “Clean Georgia” is very important. The middle of September is known as the days of cleaning the Earth held under the aegis of UN. Georgia joined this action three years ago. The aim of the project “Clean Georgia” is public awareness and involvement of society in process of solid waste management.
The project is held by NGOs consortium Greens Movement Friends of Earth – Georgia financed by Swedish International Agency. As G. Tsagareishvili stated, these days, celebrated on September 19-21 obtained the particular status this year as the Government hailed this endeavor and all state instances were involved. As the material confirm, the environmental pollution scales in Georgia is immense. There are lots of pollution sources which aggravate ecological background. “This problem is the greatest challenge for the Government, though none of them can solve it if we all – every citizen do not do our best to take care of environment”.
The draft on Solid Waste Management is already developed. It is also important to increase the culture of environmental protection of our citizens. N. Chkhobadze spoke about held activity and noted importance of relevant legislation. “Our main task is to clean Georgia but if population does not stand by our side, none of the Governments can solve this problem”. She thanked the Parliament and the Government for aid and support, also Swedish Government for financial aid and expressed her hope that whole Georgia will be involved in this campaign.
