Nikoloz Samkharadze: the election observation process has become excessively politicised. Political groups favour ideological allies and make assessments not based on facts but on ideological and party relationships

Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee and the Head of the Parliamentary Delegation to OSCE PA and Maia Bitadze, Chair of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee, and a member of the Parliamentary Delegation to OSCE PA, participate in the OSCE PA autumn session 2025.

N. Samkharadze delivered the address on ‘Approximation of perspectives: enhancing dialogue, mediation and trust in the evolving era’.

“The 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act acquires special significance this year. The document, which half a century ago aimed to strengthen peace and cooperation, remains relevant today. Experience has shown us that mechanisms created with good intentions often become objects of ideological distortion and polarization. For decades, in conditions of aggression, occupation of territories — the first unfortunate example of which is Georgia — conflicts, and the fostering of internal destabilization, several political forces still fail to learn the lessons of the past”, - he stated.

In his address, he reviewed the modern political tendencies and interference in the domestic political affairs by international actors.

“It is evident that some political forces and politicians are trying to ignore the will of the people; in the name of democracy, they attempt to disregard election results and cultural particularities, encourage the growth of radicalism, and, most importantly, seek to gain influence through non-democratic means, which puts the stability and security of states at risk”, - he stressed.

N. Samkharadze highlighted the increasing politicisation of observation missions within the OSCE PA, which poses a threat to the organisation’s reliability and adherence to longstanding standards.

“Election observation has become an overly politicized process; political groups give preference to their ideological allies and base their assessments not on actual facts but on ideological and party relationships. This, in turn, undermines the credibility of the organization and the work that our institution has carried out for decades.
I hope that, ultimately, common sense will prevail and we will once again see respect for the sovereign will of the people, both from domestic and international actors, as this is the fundamental basis of democracy”, - he noted.

Parliamentary Delegation to OSCE PA participates in the OSCE PA 23rd autumn session, held in Istanbul on November 17-19.
